Hemp has been used for generations, even centuries and has many different uses, whether it be for: Clothing, Paper, Fuel, as a Health Supplement like we have on our website or other uses, the list goes on and on. One thing that I have come to discover is the use of Hemp for a building material, not only is it incredible strong, it is also sustainable at the same time. In fact, if I were to build my own house, I would be sure to make it out of hemp. Within the article I am going to share some the use benefits of using Hemp to build your own Hemp House whilst also explaining how to go about doing it.
- One of the main benefits of building your own home out of hemp is that it is relatively quick and easy to do. I have heard some people say that the main frame of a house can be put together in as little as a week.
- Little Training is required. Houses build from hemp date back hundreds of years, in fact some of the old building in the UK were built this way. Therefore many of the old traditional building techniques are still used today.
- It is Sustainable! Hemp as a plant is known to be sustainable, as it is one of the fastest growing plants in the world. This in itself makes hemp an incredibly sustainable building material, though when you build a house out of hemp, it becomes even more sustainable. It is also known to be Carbon Negative which can drastically reduce our carbon footprint. – Depending on the compounds used to make it, it can also be 100% recyclable.
- Creates a Safe and Secure Home: Often people think that a house made from Hemp would be a fire risk, yet it is much safer that other building materials. It is much lighter the traditional concrete, fireproof, waterproof and it only decays when buried.
According to researchers at the University of Bath, in the UK. “Using renewable crops to make building materials makes real sense – it only takes an area the size of a rugby pitch four months to grow enough hemp to build a typical three bedroom house”, with an average of 1.5 million plants per acre, amounting to roughly three to four tons of plants at harvest, that is just under five tons of CO2 removed from our environment every 3 to 5 months per acre.
